Australia is a strategic location for the internationalization of the University of Bayreuth. Bayreuth researchers are currently running research collaborations with eight higher education institutions in Australia in the fields of sport science, law, economics, energy and environmental research, the natural sciences, materials science and engineering. One of them is the ‚Bayreuth-Melbourne Polymer/Colloid Network‘.
Ever since it opened its doors in 1975, the University of Bayreuth has been resolutely pursuing strategic international cooperation, including collaboration with Australian universities. „Our new office in Melbourne will enable us to provide better support for our researchers and students during their time Down Under,“ explained University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible. „I believe that our presence in Australia will also further increase the number of excellent international students and researchers on our campus in Bayreuth,“ said Prof. Leible. According to the Director of the University of Bayreuth’s International Office Dr. Arnim Heinemann, „The University of Bayreuth’s international visibility and attractiveness have increased considerably as a result of cooperation with two of Australia’s leading universities, Melbourne and Monash. This is illustrated by the notable increase in international applications that have been received by the University of Bayreuth since the start of the project ‚Bayreuth-Melbourne Polymer/Colloid Network‘.
In April 2018 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has granted the Bayreuth-Melbourne Polymer/Colloid Network follow-up funding for two more years until the end of 2020. This network provides an opportunity for Australian and German PhD students and post doctoral researchers to study and work at partner institutions. This broadens their research experience and helps young researchers to develop international networks. Distinguishing features of the cooperation with Australian partners include a concentration of joint research projects such as the ARC Centre of Excellence – operating with multinational funding, intensive scientific exchange, and a commitment to mutual mobility.
